this has been one of our more exciting months here at ecc; february has been steeped in connection with our evansville community. we had the honor of exploring new ways to connect over, teach, and share this love we share for coffee & the folks around it.
here are three highlights (maybe even opportunities) we thought you might enjoy:
- first, a day spent at reitz high school with spanish three
- second, coffee with a cop at the roastery
- last but not least, a collab with our neighbors, damsel brew pub
without further ado, here's why our team is officially learning spanish.
a day spend at reitz with spanish three!
nic and i (jacob) had the honor of being invited by la profesara sarah calli at reitz high school to spend a day lecturing on the value of spanish in the modern workplace, specifically in the coffee world.
it was a blast. we got to share the fact that, yes, our team is taking spanish lessons because it is so practical in the coffee world.
with that, students got to learn about careers in the coffee world (such as roasting, importing, q-grading, etc.) & even conclude with a coffee tasting from our partners in guatemala.
for me, there was something so special about getting to invite students to experience a coffee from a group of spanish-speaking producers that we've come to know and love; our friend and producer ana even sent a video directed to the class, inviting them to come visit & see how their beautiful estate, or finca, works.
let me not forget: a big thanks goes out to sarah calli; thanks so much for having us out!
finally, i mentioned opportunities above. if you'd ever have interest in something like this where you're at, just holler! you can fill out this form on our site. we'd love to talk about doing something educational or experiential with you & your group. let's grab coffee!
coffee with a cop at the roastery
this month, we had the opportunity to host coffee with a cop at our roastery and at honey moon west. each month, officers from the evansville and vanderburgh area gather at a local coffee shop to share coffee and conversation with the public. if you’ve never attended, i’d highly recommend it — it’s a thoughtful and safe space.
in retrospect, a thought came to mind. if you'll allow me a moment for a (potentially cheesy) soapbox.. coffee is an incredibly strong social bridge.
as coffee people, one of the most meaningful things we get to serve isn’t just a drink — it’s a bridge. whether people are discussing local law enforcement, catching up with a friend, or celebrating a win, coffee plays a unique role in life’s moments.
there aren’t many places that exist simply as a “space.” people gather, but they usually need something to do. coffee fills that role uniquely. coffee gives you something to hold, something to sip, something that eases the silence — all without demanding attention.
it's not an entire meal, nor is it a loud centerpiece (although we'd love to make you pause and say, dang, that's good). coffee enhances conversation without replacing it.
that’s pretty special. here's to many more conversations with those similar to us, those different from us, those we know well, and those we know half as well as we ought. if you know you know.
a collab with our neighbors, damsel brew pub
oh yes, last but so not least, there's a new beer in evansville: her name? cora. damsel brew pub is just down the street from us, a local brewer that has just made a coffee sour.
yes, cora is a coffee sour. a new take, we actually had the exciting chance to go to their lab & join them in drafting this beer's flavor. check that out here: brewery collab.
none of us had ever had a coffee sour before... how would this work? as it turns out, when you take a deliciously light ethiopian coffee (from the ecc roastery), include strawberry, & brew a nice light sour, you get something extravagant.
our whole team loves this new beer, and we can't recommend it enough. get it while it lasts! cora may only have one or two more weeks before she's gone.
what's up next?
not mentioned here, we've successfully had our first few public brew classes. next month, we can't wait to share some photos, let you in on some spring opportunities, and maybe even share some brew insights.
what would you like to see? let me know! our door's always open (literally, we almost always keep it open).
all the best,
- jacob
