Latest Coffee News
This is troubling news…
I learned late last week that some of our coffee customers have not received their web orders yet. Checking this further, I saw that no packages shipped out since December 2, 2020 have yet been delivered. This includes local First Class and Priority Mail packages. As of Monday the 14th, some packages will have been […]
Coffee Safari – Sulawesi Toraja
I’ve been fascinated by the coffees of Indonesia. It first started with a Sumatra Mandheling that, when seeing and smelling the green beans, I thought was going to be terrible. Then I roasted it and shared a few bags of the spicy, earthy, complex roast. It wasn’t long after that customers were asking for more. […]
Welcome Honey + Moon Coffee – New Name, Same Great People!
It was simply a matter of perspective. Honeydew Donuts of Mansfield, Massachusetts felt pretty strongly that our local Honey + Dew Coffee Company was encroaching on their territory… like coffee and donuts. Rather than fight a battle with a well-established and well-heeled franchise business, Jessica and Zac decided to make a new name for themselves by […]
Something New is Brewing in Evansville
Coffee aficionado Nate Templeton has been teasing friends for years with his coffee explorations, from small batch roasting to coffee catering at events, but now it appears that he has found his niche in the bottled cold brew market.
Evansville Coffee Company Prepares for 2016 Launch
Speaking at TEDxEvansville, Tim Piazza revealed his plan to launch a locally-branded coffee roasting company in Evansville, Indiana. “Evansville has a long tradition of offering fresh-roasted coffee, dating back to the early 1900’s Diamond Coffee and Spice Mills owned by the Ragon Brothers. Evansville is a proud city with a rich heritage, and right now is […]

Coffee Grind Size – A Visual Guide
What’s the right grind for your coffee? The answer is simple–it’s whatever tastes the best to you. But if I just stopped now, there would be no reason for this notebook entry, so let’s forge onward! Coffee grind size matters because you will always get the best results with the right grind for the brew […]
Which has more caffeine? Light Roast or Dark Roast?
This question comes up so often, that I feel it needs a more lengthy response than my typical “If you judge by volume, light roast, if you judge by weight, dark roast”. Even this response requires an explanation, so let’s dive in! Caffeine is one of many compounds found in green coffee, as well as […]
Spring 2019 Road Trips
It’s been a heck of a year so far! I’ve taken a few breaks from the roasting drum to attend some of the amazing coffee events that happen around the country! My first stop was Kansas City, for the US Coffee Championships. My keenest interest was in the roasting championships, as I was very curious […]
What is Espresso?
Americans are such innovators. If we don’t invent it, we improve it and make it our own. Nothing can be more illustrative than with the example of espresso. This liquor of potent coffee extraction is a quintessentially Italian beverage made possible by early 20th century invention. Names like Bezzera, Pavoni, Gaggia and Arduino—popular today because […]
Measuring Coffee Strength
When I started roasting coffee, I became more concerned than ever with a mountain of details related to brewing. After all, how could I judge the quality of my roasts if I couldn’t be assured that I was brewing coffee under optimum conditions? This wasn’t a question for me previously, since I was only brewing […]
How To...
Do You Buy Ground Coffee?
Your coffee-loving friends have already told you that it’s a bad idea to buy ground coffee. They say it’s not as fresh, that ground coffee goes stale quickly. But hey, you’ve been drinking coffee for years, buying it already ground, and you’ve been perfectly happy with it, right?
How to Store Coffee Beans
While I strongly believe you should only buy one week’s worth of fresh coffee beans at a time, sometimes it just isn’t possible, especially when you live in a smaller city where fresh-roasted, quality beans are simply not available. In this case, you may need to store beans for more than 1 week.
The Tip Jar
Starbucks
Is this site paid for by Starbucks? There's too much mention of them. If anyone has read "Where Am I Eating" or listened to the author speak here in Evansville last month, you would refrain from giving your money to that corporation.
Wired Coffee House and Music Venue
Americanos are usually served 12 oz, or 16 oz. but if you ask for an 8oz with a double-shot, it comes out nice and strong, and (to my taste) perfect.
Black Lodge Coffee Roasters
Black Lodge roasts their own beans. The roaster is featured prominently in their retail establishment in downtown New Harmony.
Honey Dew Coffee Co
You can get Bliss Artisan Ice cream at Honey Dew, no need to drive to Mt. Vernon for an ice cream fix.
Barber Bistro
Try their Nitro! It's the Bomb!
