Rather than fight a battle with a well-established and well-heeled franchise business, Jessica and Zac decided to make a new name for themselves by choosing a close second among their favorite possible choices, and rebranded to Honey + Moon Coffee Company.

Speaking at TEDxEvansville, Tim Piazza revealed his plan to launch a locally-branded coffee roasting company in Evansville, Indiana.
“Evansville has a long tradition of offering fresh-roasted coffee, dating back to the early 1900’s Diamond Coffee and Spice Mills owned by the Ragon Brothers. Evansville is a proud city with a rich heritage, and right now is a great time to celebrate everything Evansville has to offer. I hope Evansville Coffee Company serves to both honor and celebrate our city,” says Piazza.
Evansville Coffee Company will provide fresh-roasted whole bean specialty coffee delivered to homes and offices in Evansville and surrounding communities. According to Piazza, “I started roasting my own coffee because I couldn’t buy coffee locally that matched the quality and freshness I was accustomed to when I lived in Boston and Denver. For years, I purchased coffee online from the best roasters in the nation, but the shipping cost doubled the price I paid. Once you have truly great coffee, it is hard to settle for something that is old and uninspired.”
Evansville Coffee Company is described as a “boutique micro-roaster” producing coffee in small batches with precision control. Beans are first profiled on a computer-controlled sample roaster, then once the ideal roasting profile is determined, coffee is then produced in 4 lb. batches following a calibrated roasting program. This approach allows them to purchase micro-lots of coffee where the quality is exceptional but the quantity is far too small for large commercial roasters to bother with.
“Our goal is simply to produce always great-tasting, always-fresh, always-interesting coffees. Our market is the coffee connoisseur, the person who uses a burr grinder and pays attention to the roast date on their coffee. We know this isn’t for everyone, and that’s okay. We are simply making exceptional coffee more affordable in our local market.”
Customers will be able to subscribe to receive weekly deliveries of fresh-roasted coffee based on a selection of roast styles and blends. Subscribers can change their order quantity or select a substitution coffee at any time, or just keep a standing order that ensures they always have fresh coffee available. Select restaurants and cafés will also feature Evansville Coffee Company available in the cup or in the bag for retail purchase.

After 5 years of discussion and planning, Clint and Heather Vaught opened the River City Coffee Company inside Heather’s downtown destination shop, the River City Mercantile. They currently serve a variety of espresso drinks, pour-overs, brewed coffee and cold brews, in addition to decaffeinated coffee and a variety of chai and tea beverages.
Downtown Main Street is increasingly attracting small businesses and restaurants, and River City Coffee is a welcome addition, with hours from 7am to 7pm. Stop by and see them! I believe they will quickly become a favorite.
David Rudibaugh has taken the lead on re-opening Wired Coffeehouse in downtown Evansville, on 4th street between Sycamore and Vine.
Wired is serving some tasty espresso drinks from their La Vittoria 2 group machine, as well as offering a rotating variety of brewed coffees, iced coffees and frozen drinks.
One of the more unique beverages they offer is a Japanese Ice Brew, where concentrated, hot brewed coffee is poured over ice using a Chemex brewer, to make a unique cold beverage that is full strength and very refreshing. This works great with lighter roasts where you can taste the more fruity flavors.
I hung out for a while on a late-morning midweek day, and the atmosphere was pleasant and mellow, with a few road warriors, acoustic music on the sound system, and customers wandering in every few minutes, with no wait for ordering.
The barista is very intent on making the best possible coffee drinks, and has partnered with Sunergos Coffee in Louisville, KY for their beans. So far, this is working out great for them.
